Cascara is a superfruit rich in nutrients and beauty-enhancing properties. It’s made by drying the outer skin of fully ripened coffee cherries, and offers a rare combination of being additive-free, high in polyphenols, and low in caffeine.
Polyphenol levels are approximately ten times higher than those found in blueberries, and it also contains a generous amount of chlorogenic acid, a powerful antioxidant. These qualities have made cascara increasingly popular as an anti-aging drink, especially among women.
Interestingly, the outer skin of coffee cherries accounts for about 40% of the harvest volume, yet it is often discarded—contributing to environmental pollution in producing countries. However, producing cascara requires significant labor and cost, and strict quality control makes it difficult to manufacture. As a result, only a few farms produce it, and imports to Japan remain limited.
